Foot Surgery Prep
I thought I had months to get ready and then my date was moved 2 months sooner so it was a mad rush.
Medical - I got all my supplements ahead with 2 to 3 months supply. For my RA I do take supplements to stay healthy so I wanted to make sure I had my normal items. A huge concern for me were my RA meds. RA meds prevent inflammation and you need inflammation for healing and for the bones to fuse. Fortunately the meds I take Sulfasalazine and Plaquenil I can continue to take while recovering so I will hopefully not have RA flares.
Home supplies - I made sure I had plenty of cleaning and toiletry supplies. Canned goods, coffee. I wanted to have more prepared foods in the freezer but I only got a few things ahead like pulled pork and stew. Prepared TV dinners on hand.
Work -I do bookkeeping work for several small clients so I made sure I was prepared to do more work at home and made sure I had ink and paper ahead. This was very involved and was very worrisome. Can’t drive so I have 2 clients with handicap accessibility so I have to figure rides out to get to those offices.
Dressing - Good weather allowed me to figure out easy outfits. I purchased summer dresses and a few cotton culotte slips. All I have to do is throw on a dress! Easy Peasy!
Bathing - This was major. I had an old cast iron tub that was getting very difficult to get in and out of with my arthritis. The bathroom needed renovation anyway so that was the top priority and was started even before the surgery decision. I have a walk in shower with a hand held option hydro-rail. Good solid seat for the shower. I bought a rechargeable electric razor for shaving legs.
Home - kept up cleaning and getting rid of clutter.
Accessibility - I am lucky to have family members with all kinds of stuff. I purchased new crutches and the knee scooter. We had a traditional walker, wheeled walker with a seat, commode and a small wheel chair. Our bedroom is a second floor loft bedroom and the bathroom on main floor so we purchased a stair lift. This was a major expense but to rent it was almost as much. We will have it for when we are old and can’t do stairs or we could sell it when done. The other thought was to rent a bed for the main floor but we hated that idea and all my clothes etc are in the bedroom. Based on the recovery timeline crutches up and down a big staircase was not doable. My major dilemma is how to get to my office in the basement. Fortunately it is a walkout basement so I can go out the main floor and go down to the basement on the golf cart or knee scooter via the yard.
These 2 walkers have been my best friend this first week of recovery. I can sit on the seat and scoot around to do things while I gain strength and get over dizziness. The grabber I have velcroed to the walker and has been handy on multiple occasions.
